Without doubt, the Taronga western Plains Zoo in Dubbo NSW Australia is one of the most exhilarating and enticing spots for people of all ages. It was first inaugurated on 28th February, 1977. The Taronga Conservation Society heads the main authority of the zoo. Spread on the 300 hectare area, the lavish collection of 800 different animals from various parts of the world really is something to enjoy. Ranging from friendly and endangered species, the big gang includes giraffes, zebras, hippos, elephants, lions, cheetahs, white rhinoceros, Galapagos turtle, ring tailed lemurs, antelopes, echidnas, Bengal tiger and many more. The Western Plains Zoo is a slice of Africa, which introduces you to the beauty of wildlife. The zoo made the name change to Taronga Western Plains Zoo on 21st January, 2008. Its mission was to draw continue the work of the Taronga Conservation Society of Australia.

Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo is an open range zoo, which means that the animals are spread out over a large area and you can use different modes of transport to see them. There is a 6km loop road that winds in and out of animal areas. You can drive through them in your car, or ride a bicycle or an electric cart. (You can hire bicycles and electric carts from the zoo). Many of the animal areas do not have enclosures, which means that you are really, really close!!!

The zoo has a special rule allowing you to entry to the zoo park for two consecutive days, on which your ticket will be valid. The most noticeable fact about the zoo is that it spreads over a huge area, thus not giving you the unsightly barrier of fences and thick rod fences.

The closest motel to the zoo is the Quality Inn Dubbo International, which is located 800 meters down the road on the Royal Dubbo Golf Course. Like a morning or afternoon walk? The Macquarie River next to the zoo and across the road from the Quality Inn offers the most fascinating view of the river banks. A long walk along the river will take you through the many Dubbo parklands and to some great fishing spots.
